Is this a sign he is cheap?

So I've been seeing this guy for a couple of weeks and we have been on two dates. The first one: he picked me up from my house and we drove to dinner. The second time he asked me to come to his apt and watch a movie, so I drove my car there. Then after he asked me on a third date. He lives in downtown and I live away from the city area, about 15 min drive. Anyhow our third date is planned at a place in downtown so he said head over to my place and we will walk there. I said it might be too far of a walk for me since I'll be in heels. He replied "then I guess you will have to pick me up this time" whaaat?? Why can't we go in his car? Why did he say it like that?
