How do I identify which type of WW2 japanese army sword I have, and where can it be restored in the USA?

The sword came from the Isle of Leyte during the battle of Leyte. My grandfather took it from a soldier he took out. I am not sure the rank of the japanese soldier, therefore I cannot match it exactly. I have searched several websites and countless pictures. so far I think it might be a moroha kukuri but it has a wooden scabbard and a rope belt attachment. there are several markings near the handle the look like S's all in small groups clustered on both sides of blade no more that 3 inches form handle. any help would greatly be appreciated.
