What's the difference between semi-auto and a carbine?

I'm about to purchase my 1st carbine rifle chambered for .40s&w. The brand is Beretta, the model is a CX7 Storm. I'm used to just handguns in semi-auto and wanted to know what is unique about a "carbine" actioned weapon.
