Would this be a good first rifle?

I'm finally at legal age to buy a rifle (I do have my weapons license so don't worry) and I just want to ask if the Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine Paratrooper 30 Carbine is a good first rifle. If not could you suggest a good first one? Just from practicing with my dad I know I'm better with rifles that have a pistol grip (not just straight like a Remington 700 SPS tactical .223). And again it's my first rifle so nothing to expensive less than 1000. I saw the Auto Ordnance for 800. Thanks
